Material Selection in Product Design
The focus of this project is on material selection in product design and aims at product designers and their activities.
Product designers distinguish themselves from other designers such as architects or aerospace engineers based on the objects they design. These products are meant for large groups of users, which often have a wide variety of products to choose from. Product designers are therefore designing for both high technical standards and high user interaction standards. Especially the user interaction aspects of the product they develop are important because these products do not only fulfill functional benefits but also emotional benefits and product designers give attention to this. It is expected that the activities of designers are influenced by the technical and user objectives of the products they design. Selecting materials is one of the aspects of designing products and therefore it is expected that how product designers select materials is also influenced by the objectives of the products they design.
So the main question of this PhD project is:
“Is the integration of technical aspects and user interaction aspects present in selecting materials and, if so, how do product designers select materials to create products that fulfill both technical and user interaction needs?”
The PhD project aims at contributing to the creation of theories concerning materials selection by product designers. Furthermore, the aim is to translate the created theories into a practical tool to support product designers.
